COAT DRIVE HELPS LOCAL PEOPLE IN NEED STAY WARM
Warming Communities…One Coat at a Time
JACKSON, Miss. (November 2, 2009) – The Mississippi Commission for Volunteer Service (MCVS), in coordination with the Office of the Governor, the State Legislature, the Institutions of Higher Learning, America Reads Mississippi (ARM) state AmeriCorps program, and the Department of Finance and Administration is collecting clean, gently used coats and jackets as part of the Coats from the Capitol community service project.
“I am always overwhelmed by the giving nature of Mississippians, so I am honored to participate in this Coats from the Capitol drive,” said First Lady Marsha Barbour. “Haley and I encourage all state employees to reach into their hearts and their closets to help those in need as we begin our holiday season.”
This national initiative is designed to inspire state employees and community members to participate in coat drives that will provide warm coats to local people that need them the most.
David Mallery, Executive Director of MCVS, says public and private collaborations such as Coats from the Capitol are an important part of a growing trend of organizations and individuals working together to serve others. “For those of us who have a warm home and warm clothes, what better way of saying “thanks” for our good fortune than to share that warmth with a neighbor in need?”
Coats from the Capitol is dedicated to distributing reusable coats, free of charge, directly to local children and adults. The program is a simple way for community members to pass along coats and jackets they no longer need.
Participating is easy; just bring your clean, gently used coats and jackets to one of over 100 donation locations from November 2 to November 30. All donated coats will be given to Stewpot Community Services and the Salvation Army for distribution to Mississippians in need.
Kolb’s Grand Cleaners is doing their part by offering free dry cleaning services for coats donated to Coats from the Capitol.
"With the support of our customers, Kolb's Cleaners has been blessed. It is our time to give back to the community and help those who are less fortunate. During this holiday season, we encourage all Mississippians to participate in this project by dropping off coats at any Kolb's location,” said Ginger Green, Owner, Kolb's Grand Cleaners.
A complete list of donation drop-off locations is available at www.mcvs.org including 89 schools throughout Mississippi, participating Kolb’s Grand Cleaners in Jackson, Brandon, and Ridgeland, and participating state agencies in Jackson.
